Make sure your kids are cool in the car this summer

Making sure your kids are cool in the car during summer isn't just about personal comfort. Children are more prone to extreme temperatures than adults, and the effects of being overheated can be severe. When you're planning your family's excursion this summer or just using your car to run shopping with your family, you'll discover these tips to keep your vehicle cool.

1. Use a sun-shade for a baby's seat.

You've seen sun shades for cars, of course. They're usually silver and are placed on the dashboard of your car to protect the interior of your vehicle while you shop for groceries and so on. There are now baby sun shades. The principle is the same. Put this shade cover on top of the baby's seat when it's not being used. The cover will help keep the baby's seat cool and will prevent the plastic from getting hot in the sun and burning the hands of your baby when you put him in.

2. Make sure your car's windows are tinted.

It's obvious that the windows are the main place where sunlight's rays are reflected and warm the car. While driving, the sun's rays hitting the baby's side could cause sunburn or, at the very least, discomfort and higher temperatures. While many parents choose the suction cup-style window shade, they aren't the most efficient. While you drive or the sun's path moves through the skies, your shades aren't complete protection.

The permanent window tinting option is a superior alternative. It is possible to have window tinting installed at an auto dealership at the cost of a small amount. Based on the laws of the area you reside in, you might not be able to get the rear and front windows tinted, but it's only the side windows that you're worried about, regardless. Tinted windows can reduce interior temperatures by a significant amount.

3. Keep your car's air conditioner in good working order.

Every spring, you should check your car's cooling system tested. If there's not a leak, there should be plenty of coolants to help your air conditioner work; however, other issues could hinder airflow. Check with your mechanic about the filters in your system, and be sure that all operating switches are working in a proper manner. Make sure to point one of the vents on the sides toward the back of the seat to allow your children to experience some cool airflow.

4. Bring ice water with you.

When you go on an extended road trip, take a large water bottle filled with ice cubes and water. The frozen cubes will begin to melt enough during the heat, but they'll serve to maintain the coolness of the water. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids to stay well-hydrated, and make sure to top up with cold water every time you go to mini-marts at gas stations.

Remember never to leave your child unattended in the car, even for a short period of time. It's easy to forget about the clock when running errands, and those minutes can be vital.
